A liberal arts degree falls under the category of an arts and humanities degree. A liberal arts degree tends to focus attention on classical education concepts such as philosophy, literature, and critical thinking, rather than only science or math-based educational concepts.

Additionally, when a liberal arts degree is awarded, the main focus of study is noted as the “concentration,” rather than the major. A benefit of the liberal arts curriculum is that, to some extent, the student is able to “build” their own degree; that is, a larger amount of choice is given to students in reference to classes taken. A degree in liberal arts is an attractive prospect to many employers, as the student has not spent his or her college career studying only one topic; rather, the individual is well-rounded and well-versed in a variety of subjects. This broad range of knowledge ensures that the graduate is not forced to seek employment in any one specified field, as would a graduate who studied engineering or nursing. As an alternative to immediately joining the work force, liberal arts graduates may elect to continue on to graduate school. Again, the choice of continuing education is virtually limitless; students with a liberal arts degree may elect to go on to business school, medical school, or law school.
