Portland State University is a medium-sized undergraduate and postgraduate university in Portland, Oregon. Portland State offers over sixty undergraduate programs ranging from Accounting to Economics to Criminal Justice, and over forty masters and doctorate programs including topics in Conflict Resolution to History and Mathematics. The university was founded in 1946 and currently has over 20,000 undergraduates.
Portland State University is well known for its very high acceptance rate of just over 89%. Additionally, Oregon residents are frequently attracted by the university’s in state tuition rate, which is currently at $6,765. Out-of-state residents, on the other hand, currently pay $21,198.
In 2004, PSU established the nation’s first biomedical informatics program in a joint venture with Oregon Health and Science University. This is not the only program of the university dedicated to science, however. In 2006, Portland State opened a new engineering building that has been well received by current and prospective students. Finally, Portland State is currently working on a very large sustainability program, offering students the rare opportunity to learn all about environmental sustainability.
Portland State University attracts an older student body, averaging 25 years of age, because of its urban location and night classes. The university also offers Saturday classes to accommodate working students.
